Lenexa, KS (June 3, 2013)—HIPOWER SYSTEMS, a manufacturer of power-generation and power distribution equipment in the U.S. and Canada, today released a list of hurricane preparedness tips that are appropriate for a wide range of businesses as well as property owners.
HIPOWER SYSTEMS also announced that in advance of hurricane season starting yesterday, it had increased its supply of backup generators of all sizes, as well as its ingenious new generator connection cabinets.
“Even though the 2014 hurricane season is predicted to have lower-than-normal activity, anyone impacted by a hurricane knows it only takes one to cause a disaster,” said HIPOWER SYSTEMS President Rafael Acosta. “Furthermore, summer storms, wildfires and other potential disasters are becoming more severe. Newly developed equipment can make connecting a generator quick and easy, and we encourage our clients to adopt these solutions before a storm approaches.”
The equipment to which Acosta referred to is HIPOWER SYSTEMS’ new generator connection cabinets, which connect permanently to an automatic transfer switch (ATS; an electrical device that switches a load between two sources; this may also need to be installed). With these cabinets in place, a company can connect a temporary or towable, commercial-grade generator to the building’s power supply without the need for an electrician. Once the generator is delivered, a company can have power up and running within minutes.
In addition to its industrial diesel and natural gas generators, HIPOWER SYSTEMS manufactures a wide array of portable generators in a broad range of prime power ratings from 25 KVA (The HRMW 25 T6) to 1150 KVA (The HRMW 1150 T6). Available for rent at equipment companies across the U.S. and Canada, all of these generators are surrounded by high-grade, sound-attenuated and spill-proof enclosures. “Organizations that do not own a generator should confirm with a local rental company, in advance, that they will be on a priority list for generator delivery, should a storm approach,” said Acosta.
In addition to its recommendations for advance arrangements for power continuity, HIPOWER SYSTEMS offers the following “hurricane season tips” for organizations.
Test Emergency Equipment. Companies that own standby generators should ensure they are fully up to date on maintenance. Furthermore, any other equipment needed during a power outage, such as hallway emergency lighting, should be tested to ensure it works properly
Catch Up with FEMA. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) continuously updates its disaster preparedness website, Ready.gov, with valuable advice. Businesses and property owners should familiarize themselves with the site and its resources, which range from risk assessment and disaster planning tools to a video-based course on creating a business continuity plan.
Update Your Disaster Plan. Even if an organization has a disaster recovery plan, it should update it once a year to incorporate any changes and confirm that new employees have read pertinent information. Also, firms should revisit their “critical employees” list (those expected to perform specific functions before, during or after a disaster). If personnel have moved, left the company or been transferred or promoted within the firm, to may impact their ability to respond as anticipated. Life events, such as the birth of a child, may also make certain workers unavailable if disaster strikes. Finally, companies should have backup personnel designated in case a key staffer cannot perform his or her designated role for any reason.
