Lenexa, KS (May 23rd, 2013)—HIPOWER SYSTEMS, a manufacturer of power-generation and power distribution equipment in the U.S. and Canada, today announced the availability of its new line of Generator Connection Cabinets. These ingenious power distribution devices enable organizations to connect a pullable or towable generator to a building’s incoming automatic transfer switch (ATS; a dedicated connection for incoming auxiliary power) within minutes.

 

“From data centers to hospitals, we have many customers for whom a power outage of even seconds is simply not an option,” said HIPOWER Sales Director & Division Manager, Power Distribution, Raimond Castillo. “These Generator Connection Cabinets enable companies to bring a secondary backup power source to their locations without the disruption and complexity of lugging a generator into an inaccessible location and spending hours connecting wiring.”

 

As an example, Castillo cited a data center, which has primary power backed up by a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) and a standby generator. Should power fail, most UPS systems will provide four hours of backup power. After that, the standby generator is supposed to kick in. However, should that generator be offline for service or maintenance, or should it experience a failure, the data center must find another power supply before the fourth hour elapses. 

 

With a Generator Connection Cabinet in place, the center would be able to have a generator towed to its site for fast connection. “This may sound like an extreme scenario,” said Castillo, “but we have customers that purchase our cabinets to prevent this exact occurrence. For data centers that guarantee 99.999% uptime, an outage can cost a million dollars, per hour, in contract penalties and lost customer goodwill.”

 

Other situations where these cabinets will be valuable are for convenience stores and gas stations that wish to stay open after a storm but do not want the expense of a standby generator at every store. With a Generator Connection Cabinet at each location, the operator can tow a generator from one site to the next, running the power until fuel and other supplies have been sold out, then take it to the next store down the line, and so on.

 

Castillo noted that Generator Connection Cabinets will also protect against fuel pump failures to standby generators. “We have had customers where they literally had ‘bucket brigades’ of employees delivering fuel, hand-over-hand, to keep standby generators running in an emergency,” said Castillo. “With one of these units permanently connected to the building’s ATS, companies can tow a generator into an adjacent parking lot or alley and connect it via cabling straight to the Generator Connection Cabinet, then move forward with power.”
