01/15/2014 | HIPOWER SYSTEMS Provides Generator to Simson Maxwell for Use at First Land-Based Closed-Container Salmon Farm in Canada
HIPOWER SYSTEMS, a manufacturer of power-generation and power distribution equipment in the U.S. and Canada, announced that in early 2013 they manufactured a custom engineered HIPOWER generator package that is now providing backup power for the ‘Namgis Closed Containment Salmon Farm, the first land-based salmon-farming project in Canada.
A leading HIPOWER distributor, Simson Maxwell, worked alongside the Ritchie foundation that donated the generator to the ‘Namgis First Nation, the indigenous band of peoples in British Columbia that own the farm. The goal for the project, which will be one of the world’s first to raise Atlantic salmon to full market size, is to reduce environmental impacts to area wild salmon while creating economic opportunity for local residents.

The ‘Namgis people have been reliant on salmon for thousands of years, long before the development of salmon farming in response to the overfishing of wild salmon. Worried about the state of wild salmon stocks and cognizant of possible dangers of open fish farms—including disease within the farms that could spread to wild salmon populations—the 'Namgis sought an alternative. Working with the SOS Marine Conservation Foundation and Tides Canada, the 'Namgis First Nation launched this pilot project to prove the economic viability of growing Atlantic salmon sustainably on land, separate from the marine environment. The project partners also expect the closed-containment farms will be less stressful for the fish, resulting in faster growth rates―with 30% less feed and no pesticides or antibiotics.
