01/04/2018 | HIPOWER SYSTEMS Set to Open New Manufacturing Facility
Sam Silva, Hipower Systems Managing Director, is relieved to see work nearing completion on the company’s $45 million manufacturing facility in Olathe, Kansas.
The 515,000-square foot building will be Hipower Systems’ new corporate headquarters and will house the company’s North American operations, from engineering and manufacturing to sales and support.
“We finalized the purchase of the building in March and started the modifications in June,” Silva said. “Since then, we’ve invested hundreds of hours in planning modifications to the building to accommodate installation of the equipment and overall production layout. Our manufacturing team has been patient. Now they’re ready to move in less than two months, start the assembly line and begin building our new, Tier 4 Final diesel generators and industrial stand-by generators.”
Silva said he is proud of the team and pleased that the effort progressed with relatively few interruptions.
“Our project engineer, Miguel Calpe, has done a tremendous job. A project of this magnitude requires a lot of effort and resources and Miguel has worked closely with the entire team...equipment suppliers, building contractors, vendors, government officials and inspectors. He’s really good at making sure all the pieces come together to create an integrated, balanced factory,” said Silva.
With a degree in industrial engineering and professional certification in lean manufacturing, Calpe has the credentials and experience required to manage complex construction projects. The design and construction of Hipower Systems’ new factory is the second large-scale project he has supported since joining the company six years ago.
Calpe said learning to successfully manage construction projects is an iterative process.
”With each one you get better. You gain expertise that is applicable across all projects. You also use all available tools. For this project, for example, we incorporated Lean Six Sigma principles at the very earliest stages because the resource management and quality concepts are relevant in both construction and manufacturing.”
Lean Six Sigma is a manufacturing philosophy that helps organizations integrate quality, efficiency and waste minimization across all manufacturing processes.
Silva, who holds black belt certification in Lean Six Sigma, said the highly-regarded discipline supports Hipower Systems’ objectives of making manufacturing cycles and other processes faster and less wasteful.
“Construction of our new factory was complex. And designing and building our new Tier 4 Final generators and our industrial stand-by generators is complex,” Silva said. “Lean Six Sigma allows our team to work effectively within those complex environments.”
“Our Tier 4 Final generators will be among the best in the industry,” said Calpe. “We are also developing a new line of industrial stand-by generators that we have designated as flagship products for Hipower Systems. With these product lines we are confident that we will continue being successful in a very competitive market. We’re successful because we understand how to balance quality, dependability and pricing in ways that resonate with customers.”
