07/08/2015 | Automatic Standby Generator Units for Flood-Prone Areas

As part of emergency preparedness, automatic standby generator units are good investments that can provide safety and comfort in the midst of a disaster.

Recent years brought some of the worst storms in American history, which should serve as a wake-up call to prioritize better emergency preparedness. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, natural gas-powered generators served as a reliable source of power in a number of blacked out areas affected by flooding. Similarly, gas-powered systems provided electricity and heating to major buildings at New York University and homes in Co-op City when Hurricane Sandy left much of NYC without power.

In both situations, natural gas generators proved just as reliable as diesel generators in providing much-needed power in times of a major disaster. Traditionally, diesel generators were considered the better option as they were built to be more resilient to rugged conditions. Today, natural gas-powered generators are built with a quality that's at par with their diesel-powered counterparts while also offering cleaner energy at a lower cost.

But in terms of reliability during severe weather events, gas-powered generators allow facilities to take advantage of existing supply lines that distribute natural gas across the city. When storms cause flooding, diesel tankers may become stranded and unable to deliver fuel to locations that rely on diesel for standby power. In contrast, gas-powered generators can readily produce electricity thanks to the availability of natural gas.

There are caveats, however. In areas prone to earthquakes, severe damage to supply lines can render natural gas generators ineffective. Thus, homes, businesses, and industrial facilities are advised to plan for an emergency power supply while keeping the most common natural disasters in the area in mind.

If you're looking for the right power generator to prepare your home or business for major disasters, HIPOWER SYSTEMS can be of service. Since our founding in 1982, we have been providing residential, commercial, and industrial clients as well as municipalities with top-of-the-line power generators and distribution systems to help them meet their power needs. Talk to us about your power requirements, and we'll help you select the best automatic standby generator for your needs.
